A colour scheme for May.

May is a pretty month 🌸🌞🌱

And as you can see, I can officially leave my coat at home, although with unpredictable English weather it often feels risky!

The colours in the hawthorn flowers are every bit as lovely as the red of its berries later in the year. And the fresh greens of the new leaves are beautifully hopeful after the starkness of winter.

Twice at this time of year, I've made dresses in a gorgeous fresh green inspired by what is around me, and the lovely colours of May are making me want to make things in spring colours. I haven't decided what yet. It might be granny squares again!

Sometimes time is a reason for not making stuff or doing creative things.

Although the idea of having lots of time free to devote to that kind of thing is nice, for most people it's not realistic.

I think it's actually ok. We can use the little pockets of time, evenings when our hands are free, half an hour before we need to cook dinner, or in the early mornings before everybody else is up. Often our best ideas will land in our heads while we're in the shower, or out walking the dog. And we can find inspiration in the ordinary things around us and in the places where we live .

I've been thinking about how nature can be both delicate and resilient at the same time. If it's windy, the blossom goes, and I don't have houseplants because I can't keep them alive!

But after the winter, even the deadest looking plants spring back to life. Even if the garden is quite tidy before you go on holiday, when you come back, everything has grown, especially the weeds! And I love to see how nature takes back things people have abandoned, even if the place was entirely concrete.

Thinking about delicate things, I wanted to try making skeleton leaves using machine embroidery and soluble interfacing. It was quite fun, although a little bit fiddly.

And just in case you're wondering, if you accidently drop the soluble interfacing into a cup of tea, it will dissolve instantly, but you can drink the tea with no adverse effects! 💖😅☕

I'm currently doing a thing (honestly, lots of things. This is one of them! 🤪😅)

Over the last few months, I've been gathering ideas, images and words to create something new.

It's called the Wild Blossom Companion, and it's a gentle, monthly seasonal guide to inspire slowing down, reflection and creativity.

You know when you get a letter from an old friend, or an email you really want to read? So you wait until you can sit down in a comfy chair with a cup of tea, and take your time. Not while you're cooking dinner, or pretending to be interested in Fortnite, but when you actually have a moment to enjoy it.

That's what I'm aiming for. A thing that feels like a treat, with a nice thing to read and some creative invitations, among other things.

This is the first page of May's companion. I'll share more soon 💖🌸🌱
