    Creative Invitations For Autumn

October 3, 2025October 3, 2025 Blog, Creative Invitations, Living a Creative Life, Nature and Seasons

Why I Love Autumn For some of us, autumn is the time of year when we feel most creative. Although having just written that, I could say it about any time of year! Autumn is the year’s crowning glory. The growing season is pretty much over. Flowers have…

One of the things I really love about where I live is the nests under the eaves of my house. We live in a large village in the Norfolk fens, a few miles from King’s Lynn. It’s quite rural but we’re not completely out in the country. Having…

Summer isn’t my favourite season. For many people it is, and it’s not that I dislike it. I can see why it is so loved: the long days and warm weather, holidays and family time, the ease of slipping on a light dress instead of bundling into thermals,…

Here in my little bit of Norfolk, we’ve so far had quite a nice summer. By nice, I mean warm and sunny. There have been years, like last year, when I was still wearing tights and a coat in early July! But this year, I’m already used to…

Years ago, when I was a teacher, I remember that people beginning to talk about children as being different kinds of learners. Some children were auditory learners, which meant they learnt through listening, others were visual learners, which meant they found it easier if there was a diagram…

    Thoughts on Noticing Stripes

June 21, 2025June 24, 2025 Blog, Nature and Seasons, Thoughts and Reflections

I’ve been noticing stripes in the landscape around where I live for a long time. It might be because this bit of Norfolk near the Wash is so flat. Being flat the lines are straighter. It makes it easy to see the stripes of fields, one behind another,…

On a hunt for autumn colours! πŸπŸŒ°πŸ‚πŸ§‘ Th On a hunt for autumn colours! πŸπŸŒ°πŸ‚πŸ§‘

There's lots of red, orange and brown. In one gorgeous October orange tree I saw a happy crow (I was standing at a bus stop at the time, proof that you really don't need to go anywhere special to find inspiration!).

I spotted a patch of hawthorn on the way to the post office that had beautiful red leaves as well as red berries.

Shades of orange and brown are echoed in old walls and tiled roofs.

On a very damp and foggy morning, I couldn't see more than a few metres ahead of me, which made me much more aware if what I could see. The long grasses are brown and yellow now.

And I've never realised before that my kettle is October orange!

October πŸπŸ‚πŸŒ°πŸ§‘ What I'm noticing: Some October πŸπŸ‚πŸŒ°πŸ§‘

What I'm noticing:

Some of the trees are still quite green, but there is yellow, red and brown as well.

My favourite trees outside the shop in the village are beautiful 🍁

There are lots of berries in the hedgerows and masses of rosehips. They seem to be ready earlier this year. I don't remember that many roses in June!

I can smell wood smoke and people's coal fires. It's not that cold but a fire is always nice πŸ”₯

The evenings are really drawing in now. It's dark by the time I've finished the washing up.

The stars are so bright! And I can see my old friends Orion, Cassiopeia and the Great Bear.

Lots of people have autumn wreaths on their doors, including me πŸ₯° it seems like more of an American thing but I'm glad it's becoming a thing here too.

The last picture is of my silly cat. I think she might be the reason why one of the little pumpkins is no longer on that string of lights, but who could resist that furry little face? 😍

In case you have no idea what I am talking about, creative invitations are little prompts designed to encourage joyful, creative exploration without pressure or expectation. There is no right or wrong way and no obligation to produce anything finished or perfect πŸ’–

Here are some for autumn:

🍁 Make leaf rubbings. It's not just for children! Experiment with chalk and crayon, and different colours, single leaves and overlapping.

🍁 Collect autumn colours. You might like to match them with thread, fabric, paint or pencils.

🍁 Make a little abstract picture in autumn colours using your favourite stitches. I like French knots! πŸͺ‘ What about you?

🍁 Take a moment when outside. What can you see, hear and smell?

If you are wondering about the photos, they are of the Peter Scott walk that follows the shore of the wash from Sutton Bridge round to Kings Lynn πŸ’–
