Autumn projects! 🍁🍂🌰🍁

They need colour schemes!

I've got a few things in mind that I want to do. Some of the things are more messing about and experimenting than projects that will result in finished things. One of those things is a crocheted hot water bottle cover, in case you were wondering!

The first photo is one I took three years ago. The tree is one of a few at the recreation ground near my house. Looking at it makes me remember what a beautiful day it was.

The second is one I took in Vancouver, pre COVID. I wanted to take a picture of the tree because I liked the colours. I wasn't trying to get a good photo! It doesn't though, because it was the tree I wanted to use for a colour scheme.

The third picture is of some horse chestnuts in the village. This colour scheme is my favourite. It's quite different to the others.

I find myself more inclined to woolly crafts, and baking (and eating the results!) I also like to go to the woods, but I like to do that all year round 🌳🌲

In 2020 I wrote an ebook called Things to Make and Do in the Autumn. It was before I'd decided to move away from sewing tutorials, but funnily enough, it says all the things I want to say now about slowing down, noticing what's there, and responding to what is going on around us in a creative way.

I wanted the ebook to be a celebration of autumn, and feel like a treat for the reader. It's the kind of thing that is best enjoyed with a hot drink and a cake 🍰☕

There are ideas for things to do at home, things to do into the garden, and even some suggestions for ways to start preparing for Christmas that don't feel too Christmassy.

I'm not even thinking about my unfinished projects, because it's time to start a new one!

The photo is of Lake Skadar in Montenegro. We visited it several times while we were on holiday there. I loved the green with the blues and greys, which is why I took the photo.

I'm planning a little embroidery project, using the colours in the photo 💚💙🩶

The results of the dyeing from a few days ago 💖🌰🌱💜

The first picture is green tea. I think it turned out pink rather than green because I made a bit of a booboo and used green tea with raspberries!

The second is red onion skins. Weirdly enough the organza turned out yellow and the rovings are definitely more orange than pinkish brown.

The third is nettles. More about that in a minute! The fourth is blackberries.

I'm not an experienced dyer. I treated it like a weird experiment, cooking things up then leaving stuff to soak. I'm pleased with the results, not because they are perfect, but because there were some surprises, including the lovely golden tones and that pretty purple 💜

The last photo is a problem. I've tried dying with nettles a couple of times before, and I've found the resulting colour to be patchy. This time there were peculiar dark stains.

This isn't what the problem is. I'll choose interesting over perfect every time, and the weird marks definitely make it interesting.

The problem is that when I tried to find out why this had happened, all I could find were pictures of perfectly dyed fabric.

I don't believe for a single minute that other people have never ended up with peculiar stains when dyeing with any kind of plant stuff. Using natural dyes can be unpredictable. But there are no pictures of nettle dyed fabric that isn't a beautiful colour or perfectly even.

It seems more likely that the reason is that lots of people only want to share things that are perfect.

But dyeing isn't like that, making stuff isn't like that, life isn't like that! There are metaphorical weird stains everywhere, messy patches, mistakes, things that didn't work, kids that come home with staples in their ties and unexplained, unrecognisable objects in the washing machine.

It's not perfect, but at least it's interesting, and real!

So here is one picture at least of nettle dyed fabric that's not perfect.

As to why it's gone like that, my guess is that it was a reaction between the nettles, the pan, and where the fabric was probably touching the pan.
