How to Make a Crocheted Hot Water Bottle Cover

I often find that when the weather starts to get colder, I feel more inclined to woolly crafts. If it’s something larger, like a blanket, of course it has the added benefit of keeping my legs warm at the same time! But even smaller projects appeal as well….

Making leaf rubbings, like the paintings of leaves that I wrote about in the last post, is another easy, low risk way to respond in a creative way to the beautiful colours of autumn. Here in England, the leaves are still coming off the trees and we’re not…

I like to think of leaves as autumn’s equivalent of springtime blossom. Like the blossom, it’s only for a few short weeks. And if the weather is bad and it’s very windy, it can be even less. There’s often a real desire to hold onto the leaves and…

Now that October’s here, I’ve got plans for making autumn themed things. Here where I live, autumn isn’t quite as beautiful as it is in other parts of the world, but we still get some lovely colours. It just tends to be individual trees, rather than everywhere you…

Things to Make and Do in the Autumn

September 27, 2024June 24, 2025 Blog, Nature and Seasons, Thoughts and Reflections

There’s a song by the Saw Doctors (an Irish rock band who were big in the 90s so subsequently now are a bunch of old men!) that says about liking the seasons changing best of all. The song is here if you want to have a listen. Although…

I’m currently working on a project for my textiles degree where I need to dye small amounts of fabric and roving with natural dyes. I have tried dyeing with plant material before with limited success, and it was the right time to give it another go! Yet more…

October πŸπŸ‚πŸŒ°πŸ§‘ What I'm noticing: Some October πŸπŸ‚πŸŒ°πŸ§‘

What I'm noticing:

Some of the trees are still quite green, but there is yellow, red and brown as well.

My favourite trees outside the shop in the village are beautiful 🍁

There are lots of berries in the hedgerows and masses of rosehips. They seem to be ready earlier this year. I don't remember that many roses in June!

I can smell wood smoke and people's coal fires. It's not that cold but a fire is always nice πŸ”₯

The evenings are really drawing in now. It's dark by the time I've finished the washing up.

The stars are so bright! And I can see my old friends Orion, Cassiopeia and the Great Bear.

Lots of people have autumn wreaths on their doors, including me πŸ₯° it seems like more of an American thing but I'm glad it's becoming a thing here too.

The last picture is of my silly cat. I think she might be the reason why one of the little pumpkins is no longer on that string of lights, but who could resist that furry little face? 😍

Some creative invitations for autumn πŸπŸŒ°πŸ‚ Some creative invitations for autumn πŸπŸŒ°πŸ‚

In case you have no idea what I am talking about, creative invitations are little prompts designed to encourage joyful, creative exploration without pressure or expectation. There is no right or wrong way and no obligation to produce anything finished or perfect πŸ’–

Here are some for autumn:

🍁 Make leaf rubbings. It's not just for children! Experiment with chalk and crayon, and different colours, single leaves and overlapping.

🍁 Collect autumn colours. You might like to match them with thread, fabric, paint or pencils.

🍁 Make a little abstract picture in autumn colours using your favourite stitches. I like French knots! πŸͺ‘ What about you?

🍁 Take a moment when outside. What can you see, hear and smell?

If you are wondering about the photos, they are of the Peter Scott walk that follows the shore of the wash from Sutton Bridge round to Kings Lynn πŸ’–

I'm knitting socks again so it must be autumn! I I'm knitting socks again so it must be autumn!

I find there are particular things I like to do depending on the season. Knitting socks is lovely, but I don't want to knit in the summer. I prefer the more woolly crafts when it's colder. In the summer I prefer sewing and embroidery. Sometimes I break my own rules, because why not?!

Do you have seasonal preferences when it comes to the things you like to make? Let me know in the comments πŸ’–πŸπŸ‚πŸ§ΆπŸ§΅
