I've been doing my current favourite thing of making colour schemes from photos.

The pictures are of Lake Skadar in Montenegro. It was probably my favourite thing about that holiday. It was beautiful, very peaceful and there was lots of wildlife.

Often I'll visit somewhere, and it's so lovely that I want to make something. Photos are nice, but the photos I take with my phone don't always do justice to what's there.

Taking some of the colours to make a colour scheme means that I could make something, like granny squares or patchwork, but it's hard to do.

My tip is to pixelate the photo first!

Sometimes limits can be a good thing ☺️

This was a little painting experiment to see what variety of greens were possible with lemon yellow and Prussian blue.

I found there are quite a lot!

You don't have to be a painter to do a fun, creative thing with paint 🖌️🎨

Having more isn't always the answer. Sometimes limits can be useful.

Painting a picture with fewer colours, and mixing extra colours from what you have, usually results in a better painting.

Deciding on a limited number of colours will stop whatever it is you're making from looking chaotic and too busy.

Using what we have already can help prevent us from feeling overwhelmed or guilty for buying more.

Sometimes it's more fun to use our creativity and resourcefulness to make something from what we have already!

Some more thoughts on limitations 🪻🪻🪻

Having too much can sometimes be a problem.

Too much choice can make it harder to make a decision and make us feel overwhelmed, instead of doing the thing we want to do.

It's like going out for lunch and not being able to decide what to eat because the menu is huge.

Or going to a shop to buy yarn, to find that there is every colour, type and weight you can imagine.

Or deciding to splosh some paint about, but having a paint set with so many colours you don't know where to start.

Having options is nice, but too much choice can be overwhelming.

And having an abundance is no guarantee anyway. Sometimes having less means focusing your mind on what you do have. Setting limits, like deciding to use only what you have already, or to use only natural or found materials, can not only make the results better, it can make the process more fun too 🪻🪻🪻
