How to Make a DIY Tie Dyed Dress

This post contains affiliate links. One of my youngest boy’s favourite things to do at the moment is to make tie dyed t shirts, and it’s easy to see why. As well as looking fabulous, at 9 years old he’s experiencing what those who are makers feel every…

What is a Toile and Why Would You Make One?

A toile, also known as a muslin in the USA, is a prototype of a garment. In the design process, it sits in between drafting pattern pieces and the finished version. The toile allows the designer to check that the idea in his or her head will actually…

Inspiration is weird. Sometimes it comes from the weirdest of places. Other times it might come from somewhere you’d expect, like Pinterest or somebody else’s blog, but once it has been processed through the weirdness in one’s brain, ends up as a bonkers idea. This is what happened…

    Godet Skirt Revisited: Part 2

    June 18, 2022June 24, 2025 Blog, Sewing Archives

Last time, I reposted a tutorial I wrote back in 2015 for a skirt with godets. I have plans to develop this into something else, but first I wanted to have a go at remaking the skirt using the original instructions. The skirt I made back then is…

I originally posted this tutorial in 2015, so long ago now! The skirt was a success, although I should have finished the edges of the blue fabric with an overcasting stitch because it frayed quite badly. In the end, I wore the skirt for several years, until it…

October πŸπŸ‚πŸŒ°πŸ§‘ What I'm noticing: Some October πŸπŸ‚πŸŒ°πŸ§‘

What I'm noticing:

Some of the trees are still quite green, but there is yellow, red and brown as well.

My favourite trees outside the shop in the village are beautiful 🍁

There are lots of berries in the hedgerows and masses of rosehips. They seem to be ready earlier this year. I don't remember that many roses in June!

I can smell wood smoke and people's coal fires. It's not that cold but a fire is always nice πŸ”₯

The evenings are really drawing in now. It's dark by the time I've finished the washing up.

The stars are so bright! And I can see my old friends Orion, Cassiopeia and the Great Bear.

Lots of people have autumn wreaths on their doors, including me πŸ₯° it seems like more of an American thing but I'm glad it's becoming a thing here too.

The last picture is of my silly cat. I think she might be the reason why one of the little pumpkins is no longer on that string of lights, but who could resist that furry little face? 😍

Some creative invitations for autumn πŸπŸŒ°πŸ‚ Some creative invitations for autumn πŸπŸŒ°πŸ‚

In case you have no idea what I am talking about, creative invitations are little prompts designed to encourage joyful, creative exploration without pressure or expectation. There is no right or wrong way and no obligation to produce anything finished or perfect πŸ’–

Here are some for autumn:

🍁 Make leaf rubbings. It's not just for children! Experiment with chalk and crayon, and different colours, single leaves and overlapping.

🍁 Collect autumn colours. You might like to match them with thread, fabric, paint or pencils.

🍁 Make a little abstract picture in autumn colours using your favourite stitches. I like French knots! πŸͺ‘ What about you?

🍁 Take a moment when outside. What can you see, hear and smell?

If you are wondering about the photos, they are of the Peter Scott walk that follows the shore of the wash from Sutton Bridge round to Kings Lynn πŸ’–

I'm knitting socks again so it must be autumn! I I'm knitting socks again so it must be autumn!

I find there are particular things I like to do depending on the season. Knitting socks is lovely, but I don't want to knit in the summer. I prefer the more woolly crafts when it's colder. In the summer I prefer sewing and embroidery. Sometimes I break my own rules, because why not?!

Do you have seasonal preferences when it comes to the things you like to make? Let me know in the comments πŸ’–πŸπŸ‚πŸ§ΆπŸ§΅
