When my boys were little, I came across the idea of an invitation to play.

It involved putting bits and pieces, like seasonal homemade play dough, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, glass gems, little cutters, or twigs, into one of those snack plates with the different sections. Then you'd leave it somewhere accessible for the children to discover.

There was no requirement on the children to play with it, and they could interact with the things in the snack tray as they chose.

It's a shame that we leave this behind, this kind of playful, joyful, open ended exploration of possibilities. It's usually replaced by something much worse! That there's one correct way to do things, and then we feel horrible when we don't meet some imaginary standard of perfection.

So I encourage you to see your own creativity as a metaphorical snack plate, with all kinds of possibilities. There's no right or wrong way, just try things out and see! 💖🌸🌞🌱🌸💖

If you're stuck for ideas, here are some creative invitations.

🌸 Go out for a walk, and take a few moments to really notice what is there. What can you see, what can you hear, and what can you smell?

🌸Gather leaves, flowers, or grasses and make some prints. Paint will do if you don't have ink. Don't worry about getting perfect prints, just play and see what happens. You'll probably get some interesting textures and patterns.

🌸 Make a colour scheme for May. There are lots of lovely fresh greens at the moment, hawthorn blossom and lilacs.

So... I made a couple of colour wheels for a blog

So...

I made a couple of colour wheels for a blog post I've written about colour theory for crafters.

One of them looked a bit odd.

I realised I'd got into a muddle with what colours ought to have gone where.

My first thought wasn't a thought. It was a feeling in my stomach, like panic. Then the actual thoughts arrived.

I've messed it up.
How could I be that stupid?
All the people who have ever implied that I'm stupid and useless are right.
Now I have to do another one but I don't have time
😭😭😭😭😭

Then I realised that it was entirely fixable with a pair of scissors and a glue stick!

Also that panicking doesn't help

And that The People are wrong.

Everybody makes mistakes. They don't prove anything. But being able to either fix the mistakes or move on with your life when they can't be fixed shows resourcefulness, creativity and courage.

Even if it's just some painty patches in the wrong place.

A friend and I were chatting the other day about how lovely spring is, how we forget what a joy it is and only remember when it comes round again, and how we want to make time to enjoy it.

This has been my April.

Blossom

Petals falling like snow

Everything springing green

The fields busy with crops

Rural bus services that mean long walks sometimes!

Lots of sunny days

A first trip to the sea this year, to beautiful unspoilt north Norfolk less than an hour's drive away.

My favourite footpaths have dried out and are no longer squelchy.
