How to Survive the Summer Holidays

    July 18, 2014March 23, 2016 Living a Creative Life

The summer holidays are nearly here. Boy 3 has had his last ever day at nursery and Boys 1 and 2 break up next Wednesday. Although I’m looking forward to it, I am going slightly cross-eyed at the thought of keeping 4 little boys aged 8, 6, 4…

A Complete Outfit from Just One Pattern – New Look 6571

    July 15, 2014March 23, 2016 Living a Creative Life

It’s been a while since I’ve made anything from a pattern. Since the wrap dress that didn’t fit debacle, I’ve been put off. I’ve found anyway that as long as you keep it simple, it’s fairly easy to make clothes without a pattern. Anyway, I was reading Sewing World a…

A Mummy Oasis in the Garden

    July 11, 2014December 11, 2014 Living a Creative Life

My boys love to play in the garden. I love them to play in the garden too! It gets the noise out of the house and it gives them a chance to burn off some energy. I often forget that a few years ago the boys couldn’t play…

The observant among you may have noticed from my photography that my house is a bit of a tip. I’m not really one for the housework and there are six messy people living in my house. However, being neither a student nor a slob, I don’t especially want…

A Spring Green Wrap Dress Without a Pattern

A few weeks ago I decided to make myself a dress in bright spring green. Winter was definitely over and I was bored with my wintery things. Last time I made a wrap dress I used a pattern. Unfortunately, despite buying what I thought was the right size,…

A few months ago I decided to adopt the American practice of hanging a door wreath on the front door all year round and not just at Christmas. I made a ruffle rag wreath out of scraps of green fabrics that were left over from another project. I…

Visible mending on a pair of shoes 🧵🪡 I have the Visible mending on a pair of shoes 🧵🪡

I have the kind of feet that tend to cause holes in things quite quickly, and I only got these shoes last summer and they already had sprung holes.

We often treat things like they are disposable, and instead of mending things when they break, or spring holes, we throw them away and buy some new ones.

But we don't give much thought about what happens to them after we have put them in the bin.

Sometimes things can be recycled, but not everything is and not everything can be. Elastane (probably what the fake laces on my shoes are made of) for example won't break down even with chemicals, so as far as we know it could be here forever.

Somas a tiny act of rebellion, I repaired my holey shoes with pretty patches and Boro style stitching. They are not perfect but they are wearable again.

Colour schemes for May... 1. This is actually a d Colour schemes for May...

1. This is actually a ditch between 2 fields. It's often manky and full of litter, but the other day it looked quite nice.

2. May is a very green month, so there needed to be one mainly green colour scheme!

3. I said before that the person who said, "Blue and green should not be seen unless there's something in between" must never have looked up and seen green leaves against a blue sky. When I pixelated the photo some purple appeared, which I thought was rather nice.

4. Hawthorn flowers are usually white, but I've noticed a variety that have tinges of pink.

It always amazes me how much one tiny patch of woo It always amazes me how much one tiny patch of woodland can change from one week to the next.

At the moment it is very green. The hawthorn is flowering, although it's now past its best, but it still smells gorgeous. The rowans are flowering too, and where the flowers are almost over, there are tiny little green berries already. Some of the leaves still have their springtime hints of gold or pink.

There are lots of birds, and I can hear little creatures rummaging around in the undergrowth, although they are hard to spot. There is traffic noise too (it's hard to escape it completely), but I can choose to acknowledge it and focus on the birds instead.

I love the woods, and because of this I am working on a new guide. I've called it Things to Make and Do in the Woods in Summer: A Guide for Creative People. It's a bit like The Wild Blossom Companion, but it includes some forest bathing style things as well as some creative invitations to do in the woods and later when you get home.

I will share more about it when it is ready (it almost is). In the meantime, there is a free version of the Wild Blossom Companion if you fancy taking a look. The link is in my bio 🌿🌱🌸

So I made them look more like flowers with a pen!

There's really no right or wrong way. Just draw what you can see in the shapes 💖🌸
