Thoughts on New Year’s Resolutions and Goal Setting

Over the years, I’ve had a mixed relationship with New Year’s resolutions and goal setting. New Year’s resolutions can seem like a good idea, but can cause us some problems. Often, we set ourselves huge goals that are not even remotely realistic. We’re encouraged to “dream big”, and…

What is Wabi Sabi? Wabi sabi is a Japanese idea that is about appreciating the beauty in impermanent, imperfect things. Not to be confused with wasabi, which is Japanese horseradish, the idea of wabi sabi includes things that have aged, faded or withered, and have become more beautiful…

A little while ago, I was scrolling through Instagram when something caught my eye. It was a video of a lady making a flower arrangement. It was beautiful, with seasonal flowers and foliage, and was both rustic and sculptural. When I read her post, it was one of…

In the 1st post in this series, I talked about hierophany, the idea of markers in the landscape holding significance for both individuals and the local community, and what that might mean for us as creative people. In the second post, I wrote a little bit about using…

Lots of us have an uneasy relationship with throwing things away. We all know that we need to try to generate less waste. Fast fashion is an environmental nightmare, supermarkets still sell pasta in plastic bags that can’t be recycled, we have electronics we no longer use and…

Recently I’ve been reading a book called Enchantment: Reawakening Wonder in an Exhausted Age by Katherine May (this is an affiliate link). Both the title and some of the reviews make it sound like it’s a book full of bonkersness, but it’s not. It’s a beautifully written book…

Remember making butterfly pictures as a child? The Remember making butterfly pictures as a child? The ones I made the other week looked like flowers.

So I made them look more like flowers with a pen!

There's really no right or wrong way. Just draw what you can see in the shapes 💖🌸

After I made the colour schemes for April, I had a After I made the colour schemes for April, I had a look back at the ones I made for March. One of the March colour schemes was actually very similar to an April one.

It probably says quite a lot about which colours I like at the moment!

And it stands to reason that at a time of year when there is a lot of blossom, colour palettes are going to be similar. I don't think I could choose between them, it would be like choosing a favourite child! But I think it is interesting that the April one is definitely warmer, reflecting how spring changes from March to April in longer days and warmer weather.

If I think to, I might look for similar colours in May too, and make another colour scheme to compare with the others 🌸🌱🌿

Did you ever do butterfly paintings as a child? T Did you ever do butterfly paintings as a child?

The theme in April's Wild Blossom Companion is reflections. Sometimes our hands want to do something creative but we don't know what, and the Wild Blossom Companion has ideas of things to do within a theme.

I started off combining butterfly paintings with landscapes, and as I often find with anything literal I felt a bit anxious about whether what I was doing was any good. But that's kind of not the point! It's supposed to be playful exploration, not something that makes stress and anxiety worse! Plus the acrylic paint stuck on one of them and the paper tore.

So I gave that up and just blobbed paint onto the paper instead.

I think they look more like bunches of flowers then butterflies 💐what do you think?

And yes, I somehow managed to forget that phone needed to be the other way round! 🤦🤷🤪
