This post contains affiliate links. Creativity is an odd thing sometimes. Usually I have lots of ideas, but this hasn’t been the case as much recently. Alan Turing apparently had his best ideas in the bath, and I suspect there’s something in feeling relaxed that helps ideas to…

When you’re new to sewing, working with cotton is by far and away the easiest sort of fabric to use. It doesn’t fray too much, it doesn’t stretch, it holds its shape and it will go through the sewing machine without getting stuck or sliding around all over…

Bunting Tote Bag Tutorial This is a post I actually wrote 3 years ago when a new law was introduced in the UK that required shops to charge for plastic bags. I’m recycling it because it fits in nicely with the Year of Bunting! For making the bunting…

This morning my 16 year old peered out of the wind This morning my 16 year old peered out of the window and remarked that it wasn't really light yet!

It has been a grey, drizzly day. My youngest boy and I went out for a short walk, and I noticed the beautiful holly tree in somebody's garden, all glossy leaves and bright berries.

Before lunch, we made our Advent candle. We've been making our own from beeswax sheets for a few years now. It felt like the perfect thing to do on a gloomy day.

We lit it at dinner time, in amongst the usual mess and homework.

A rowan tree πŸ‚πŸ§‘ The rowan is one of my favo A rowan tree πŸ‚πŸ§‘

The rowan is one of my favourite trees. There's a song about it, and it always makes me think of Quickbeam the Ent in Lord of the Rings, who every time he saw a rowan tree, would lift his tree arms and sway towards it.

One year I made rowan jelly from the berries. It was a beautiful shade of orange and it tasted like nice marmalade.

There are lots of berries still on this one, and the leaves are brown and gold.

Even though it feels like winter now, there are still little bits of autumn hanging on. And it's nice to think that there is food for the birds there πŸ§‘πŸ¦β€β¬›

November πŸ‚ Storm Claudia blew most of the leav November πŸ‚

Storm Claudia blew most of the leaves off the trees last week. There are still some, but lots of them have gone now. The berries are very visible, lots of hawthorns and still some rowan berries.

Everywhere is muddy! Big piles of sugar beet have been slowly disappearing, and all the rain has made the footpaths squishy.

If I go out at 4.30 pm to get milk or cat food or bits for tea, it's dark and my reaction is "bleugghh!" But I actually quite like it. It's nice to get back home to my cosy little house with my boys and my cats.

It is tempting to dislike November but I quite like it. What about you? πŸ‚πŸ§‘

Leaf rubbings revisited πŸπŸ‚ Last year I made Leaf rubbings revisited πŸπŸ‚

Last year I made some leaf rubbings using thin paper and chalky pastels. Now a year on, I wanted to do some more, but different.

I was toying with the idea of trying out printing with a gelli plate (@vickymyerscreations has lots of videos). It looks like fun but I suspect it is addictive, so that doesn't sound like the best idea for me at the moment 🧐😜

Dealing with my disappointment with myself for being sensible, I realised that one of the things that appeals about gelli plate printing is the layers. Layers is the theme for October's Wild Blossom Companion (honestly nobody is going to check if the months bleed into each other! πŸ’–), and I had an idea to make leaf rubbings again, but creating layers by adding colour to the paper first.

I like the results, and I already had everything I needed πŸ’–πŸ§‘πŸπŸ‚ I still haven't ruled out the gelli plate thing through!
