It’s nice to have a reason to make things, and this waterproof drawstring bag is one of those kind of projects. Having a word for the year was a thing a few years ago, and although it can seem as much as of a cliche as New Year’s…

My poor old purse has finally breathed its last. While I was looking at its dirty, fraying self the other day, I realised that it had done its job for 4 1/2 years. My boys were all still at school when I made it, and I remember a…

When you’re new to sewing, you usually start with cotton fabric, and for good reasons. As well as there being a huge range of colours and prints, it washes and wears well, and it’s easy to sew with. Cotton holds its shape and it’s not slinky, so it…

What is a Toile and Why Would You Make One?

A toile, also known as a muslin in the USA, is a prototype of a garment. In the design process, it sits in between drafting pattern pieces and the finished version. The toile allows the designer to check that the idea in his or her head will actually…

Some creative invitations for autumn πŸπŸŒ°πŸ‚ Some creative invitations for autumn πŸπŸŒ°πŸ‚

In case you have no idea what I am talking about, creative invitations are little prompts designed to encourage joyful, creative exploration without pressure or expectation. There is no right or wrong way and no obligation to produce anything finished or perfect πŸ’–

Here are some for autumn:

🍁 Make leaf rubbings. It's not just for children! Experiment with chalk and crayon, and different colours, single leaves and overlapping.

🍁 Collect autumn colours. You might like to match them with thread, fabric, paint or pencils.

🍁 Make a little abstract picture in autumn colours using your favourite stitches. I like French knots! πŸͺ‘ What about you?

🍁 Take a moment when outside. What can you see, hear and smell?

If you are wondering about the photos, they are of the Peter Scott walk that follows the shore of the wash from Sutton Bridge round to Kings Lynn πŸ’–

I'm knitting socks again so it must be autumn! I I'm knitting socks again so it must be autumn!

I find there are particular things I like to do depending on the season. Knitting socks is lovely, but I don't want to knit in the summer. I prefer the more woolly crafts when it's colder. In the summer I prefer sewing and embroidery. Sometimes I break my own rules, because why not?!

Do you have seasonal preferences when it comes to the things you like to make? Let me know in the comments πŸ’–πŸπŸ‚πŸ§ΆπŸ§΅

Early autumn has its own colours, before October a Early autumn has its own colours, before October and November being deeper browns, oranges and reds.

At the moment, there is still quite a lot of green, even though it's muted, mixed with brown and yellow of leaves starting to turn and the berries in the hedgerows.

Apples are one of those things that really say September. I was admiring the apples on my neighbour's tree, not just because they looked delicious but also because the colours were so pretty.

What I thought was red was actually pink, which faded beautifully into yellow and green.

So I made a colour scheme for September, based on the colours of those apples. I have a version that includes hex codes for digital projects, and you can download it for free from my website. The link is in my bio πŸŽπŸπŸ’–

Apples represent everything about this time of year, when summer ripens into autumn. Bite into an apple, and you can taste the golden sunshine and crisp mornings.

I made a colour scheme based on my neighbour's apple tree that kindly dangled itself over her fence into the street.

I thought I might use the colours I chose as a way to help me to paint an apple. But the point of creative invitations is that anyone can do them, regardless of whether or not that person feels they are good at drawing likenesses of things. I was also aware of how the idea of drawing an apple was making me feel tense.

It's perfectly fine to splosh paint about even if you don't consider yourself a painter. Painting patches of colour is one way to try out a colour scheme. It gives you a chance to see which colours and which colour combinations you like.

If the idea of creative invitations appeals, you might like the Wild Blossom Companion. There is also a free version. The link is in the bio. πŸ’–πŸπŸ’–πŸ
