I found myself in a v good situation the other day. One of Husband’s shirts had a tear in it and Boy 4 needed new trousers. Crank up the sewing machine, it’s a chance to make stuff. Hooray! There’s a lot of fabric in a man’s shirt, especially…

How to Survive the Summer Holidays

The summer holidays are nearly here. Boy 3 has had his last ever day at nursery and Boys 1 and 2 break up next Wednesday. Although I’m looking forward to it, I am going slightly cross-eyed at the thought of keeping 4 little boys aged 8, 6, 4…

After I had made the crayon rolls for Boy 3’s nursery’ s Easter Fair, I had some small bits of fabric left over, so I decided to make some fabric flower hair bobbles. Having boys means this is something I don’t do very often! They were very easy…

Crocheted Flower Hair Bobble

April 1, 2014March 23, 2016 Living a Creative Life

Boy 3’s preschool’s Easter Fair is now less than a week away and I’ve pretty much finished the crayon rolls. I had a list of other things I was going to make, but off the list I have only managed to make some hair bobbles, these crocheted…

As makers of things, it's easy to see how colour i As makers of things, it's easy to see how colour inspires us. It's often the first thing we think of when we're planning to make something.

But textures often come into it as well.

When we're sewing, it's how we want the finished thing to feel. A cool summer skirt, a crisp shirt, a flouncy party dress for a little child, a warm winter coat.

With knitting and crochet, we might choose stitches that give a smoother finish, like stocking stitch, or something more varied, bobbles or cabling.

Even with painting, there are ways to paint that suggest textures, and certain colours that evoke smoothness, or a rougher surface.

Different textures are all around us, and inspiration might strike if we take a moment to notice ๐Ÿ’–๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒฟ

The theme of July's Wild Blossom Companion is textures, and if you would like to find out more about it, it is for sale in my Etsy shop Gather and Bloom. The link is in my bio ๐Ÿ’–

This is a shameless plug for a thing I've made. This is a shameless plug for a thing I've made.

It's the Wild Blossom Companion for July.

Can you see how pretty it is? I wanted it to feel like a treat, so they are all pretty colours with nice graphics.

There's a little thing to read. The first couple of paragraphs are in the second picture.

Then there are some quotes, from writers and artists.

Next there are some creative invitations. These are open ended, joyful suggestions that won't result in anything polished, but will give you a chance to exercise your creativity and might feed into something else later on.

There are journaling prompts, if that's your thing. If it's not, you could pick one or two to have a think about, or ignore them. I won't be coming round to check!

Lastly there's a blank page for you to write your thoughts down on if you want to.

The Wild Blossom Companion is a subscription, so you'd sign up for a year and get one every month. The info is on my website a.wilson.co.uk.

Or if you just want to try July, I have individual months for sale on my new Etsy shop Gather and Bloom etsy.com/shop/gatherandbloomGB

Helping inspiration to find us doesn't have to be Helping inspiration to find us doesn't have to be complicated. A little walk and our senses are sometimes all we need.

Even one small sensory thing can spark an idea.

Swipe through the carousel for prompt for each sense that you can try when you are out. I've combined smell and taste, at least until the blackberries are ripe!

What sense feels most inspiring to you at the moment? ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฑ

It's interesting how stripes appear in nature and It's interesting how stripes appear in nature and more generally in the landscape.

๐ŸŒธ On shells and pebbles
๐ŸŒธ On old walls, there might be stripes moss between layers of bricks
๐ŸŒธ Fences and hedges make stripes in the fields
๐ŸŒธ Woods, beach, sea, sky and clouds make a stripy view
๐ŸŒธ The way shadows fall
๐ŸŒธ On feathers

I remember realising how stripy the Fens were years ago. I was 16 and on a trip to Ely with the church choir. It was a place I had wanted to visit, mainly because of the children's book, Tom's Midnight Garden!

While I was there I bought a postcard. It was a watercolour of the cathedral, and I noticed how the artist had painted the fields as stripes.

Years later, I was on the beach at Hunstanton with my boys, and I noticed how the sand, the sea, the sky and the clouds made stripes.

There are often stripes on the things we make too. I have a half finished ripple blanket upstairs!

What are you noticing at the moment?

๐ŸŒธ This kind of noticing is something we explore in the Wild Blossom Companion โ€” a seasonal creative guide full of gentle invitations like this. June is available on Etsy. The link is in my bio ๐Ÿ’–
