    A Crocheted Daffodil Tutorial

Ok, so I’ve been going beserk with the crocheted flowers lately. My excuses are as follows: I like them. I like winter but I’m bored with it now. I’m looking forwards to flowers, sunshine and being able to leave the house with the boys in under 20 minutes. So…

I have been crocheting a lot of flowers recently, partly because I like them and partly because I wanted to crochet a flower garland. I like winter but I’m a bit bored of it now. It takes too long to get myself and the boys bundled into coats and hats…

    The Year of the Bus

    February 20, 2015March 19, 2016 Living a Creative Life

A few weeks ago we took the boys off to London to see the bus sculptures in the Olympic Park at Stratford. The sculptures had been commissioned to commemorate The Year of the Bus, so called because 2014 marked 60 years of the London Routemaster, 75 years of…

I have been crocheting a lot of flowers recently. I have plans for them. I’m not just making them because I like flowers and I think they are nice, although if I didn’t think that I wouldn’t make them! Flowers need leaves. At least the ones I have been…

Here’s another crocheted flower tutorial. I have a plan for these, so all will become clear in a couple of weeks! I wanted to make a flower that was different to the others, so this one has a contrasting centre and twelve petals. I like it with the…

How to Make a Little Purse

    February 6, 2015March 23, 2016 Living a Creative Life

A while ago I was experimenting with making little lined purses. I wanted them to have zips and also be flat at the bottom so that they would stand up on their own. Some gorgeous lace zips caught my eye so I decided to combine the two to…

You know that feeling when you feel inspired by na You know that feeling when you feel inspired by nature and the changing seasons, and you want to do something or make something but you don't know what?

Creative invitations are open ended ideas that invite noticing and creative exploration. There is no expectation to produce something perfect, done in a certain way or even finished. The process matters as much as the end result, and it's fine to try them, ignore them, abandon them, or take them further.

Here are some creative invitations for March:

🌼 Take inspiration from the daffodils' frilly trumpets and make something frilly. An easy way to do this is to add too many stitches when crocheting or knitting. Another is to deliberately pull at a hem while sewing it.

🌼 Spot yellow things. Obviously daffodils are yellow, but you might spot other yellow things, natural and human made.

🌼 Step outside at sunset and notice the colours in the sky. Before the clocks change, where I live sunset is at about 6.30, then afterwards an hour later. There are sometimes lovely sunsets in March.

🌼 Stitch the weather. You could add some applique as well if you wanted to. Sometimes there are all four seasons in March!

I like to have a new project in early spring 🌸🌱 O I like to have a new project in early spring 🌸🌱

Often it's the colours that I find most inspiring. After winter, the blossom is a change. And even though the lichen was already there, noticing the blossom means noticing the lichen as well.

One creative invitation for February was to start something with no intention of finishing it, so that is what I am doing.

February is not really one thing or the other, and February is not really one thing or the other, and both at the same time. There are signs of spring everywhere. Early blossom is appearing and the hedgerows are waking up. The other day, I saw buds on a magnolia tree in somebody's garden, green and fuzzy and huge.

When I took these photos, it had snowed earlier in the day. Signs of spring among reminders that it is still winter.

We forget that we are part of nature. We have cycles and seasons. If February has anything to say to us, it is that it is fine to be several things at once, or not quite one or the other. Everything will work itself out in its own time. 🌸💮🌱❄️
